2024 Dr. Ladányi Commemorative Fine Arts Competition at the Cleveland Hungarian Congress on November 29th
We are excited to announce the 2024 Dr. Ladányi Commemorative Fine Arts Competition, open to young talents of Hungarian descent attending this year’s Congress. Participants will have the opportunity to exhibit their work as part of the Friday evening program on November 29. We warmly welcome applications for this competition. All participants will receive a certificate of recognition, and the first, second, and third place winners will be awarded $250, $150, and $100, respectively. To proceed with the competition, we will need 5 contestants registering before November 1, 2024.
Dr. Imre Ladányi (1902-1986) was a distinguished dermatologist who also had a deep passion for art. His work, ranging from oil paintings to watercolors and collages, includes landscapes, portraits, and abstract pieces, exhibited in the U.S. and Hungary. As an art critic and supporter of young Hungarian-American artists, Ladányi’s foundation sponsored the Dr. Ladányi Fine Arts Competition at the Hungarian Congress.
Theme: The theme of this year’s competition is “Hungarian Successes in the World ” encompassing arts, music, geography, history, science and literature. All artwork must be based on this theme. Submissions that do not adhere to the theme will be disqualified.
Eligibility: The competition is open to applicants aged 14 to 30 who are Hungarian-Americans or have Hungarian ancestry.
Entry Fee and Rules: There is no entry fee. Each individual may submit up to three works but cannot receive more than one award.
Originality: All submissions must be original works created by the applicant.
Categories:
Traditional Art: This includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other forms of traditional art.
- Sculptures must either be self-supporting or mounted on a base for proper display.
- Paintings and drawings should be appropriately prepared; they may be framed or left unframed with space for framing.
- Works that are oversized or difficult to display will not be accepted.
- Paintings should not exceed 30″x40″ and must be no smaller than 16”x20”
Digital Art: This includes digital paintings, illustrations, 3D models, and other forms of digital artwork.
- Artists are responsible for bringing a physical copy, display or printout of their creation.
- Artists are also welcome and encouraged to bring a digital display as they see fit. Artists are responsible for providing any necessary equipment or materials for such digital displays.
- A time-lapse video or sequential screenshots documenting the creation process must be submitted.
Process Documentation: Artists must provide either photos of the work-in-progress or a time-lapse video/sequential screenshots to showcase the creative process and confirm authenticity.
Time Frame and Originality: All submitted artwork must be created within the competition period. Previously completed works or those submitted to other competitions will not be accepted.
AI-Generated Art: AI-generated images or artworks will not be accepted. All submissions must be human-made.
Deadline: All applicants must submit their resume (CV) and a photo of their artwork(s) two weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Submission Process: Final artwork and the required documentation (process photos or video) must be submitted to magyar.tarsasag@gmail.com by the deadline mentioned above.
Exhibition and Awards: The exhibition of the submitted works will take place on the Friday evening following Thanksgiving. All artists must be present at the awards ceremony, and the winner will be presented during the Hungarian Ball on Saturday. Applicants will receive discounted tickets to the Ball.
Judging: A panel of judges will determine the winners based on the following criteria.
Judging Criteria:
- Adherence to Theme: How well the artwork reflects the given theme.
- Creativity and Originality: The uniqueness and inventiveness of the artwork.
- Technical Skill: The proficiency and quality of the artistic techniques used.
- Presentation: The overall impact and presentation of the artwork.
- Documentation: The quality and completeness of the creation process documentation.
Agreement and Liability: All participants are responsible for transporting and displaying their artwork. The Hungarian Association is not liable for any loss or damage to the artworks during the event.
Art Sales: Artwork may be sold at a price agreed upon by the artist and buyer. The Hungarian Association will not take a commission or fee from these sales.
Terms and Conditions: By entering the competition, participants agree to abide by the rules. The organizers reserve the right to use submitted artworks and process documentation for promotional purposes. Any violation of the rules will result in disqualification.
